A Brief History

Old picture of Puerto Vallarta

To start with, documentation of Puerto Vallarta’s history starts when indigenous people known as Aztatlan lived in the Ameca River Valley region of Nuevo Vallarta when the Spanish arrived in the 1500’s. However, archaeologist Joseph B. Mountjoy from the University of Carolina conducted a Carbon 14 dating test on a clay pot found in 1991 that estimated that the earliest inhabitants in the region date back to a period between 580 and 320 BC.

Where Puerto Vallarta is Located

Located in Banderas Bay which is the deepest (900 meters) and longest (42 km) bay in Mexico, and the 7th largest bay in the world. Later, the town’s population grew rapidly after the introduction of banana plantations in the 1920’s. On May 31st, 1918, the Jalisco State Congress officially changed the town’s name to Puerto Vallarta.
